Kushner and Kardashian Win Pardon For Alice Johnson

63-year-old grandmother Alice Marie Johnson was on Wednesday released from prison after her life sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump.

She was sentenced to life in prison in 1997, and appellate judges and the US Supreme Court have rejected her appeals.

Kim Kardashian West had lobbied for her release, meeting the president last week. "I think that she really deserves a second chance at life", Kardashian told Mic.

Then, after saying she screamed when she got the news, she also took time to thank both Kardashian and Trump for her new freedom.

Kim K shared the president's decision on Twitter on June 6, writing "best news ever" in all caps with a news article.

"Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance", West tweeted. The first was Shalom Rubashkin, a CEO of meatpacking company who was convicted on charges of fraud and money laundering in 2009 and sentenced to 27 years in jail.

Johnson's case caught nationwide attention after the reality-television star Kim Kardashian West took notice of her case past year and retained an attorney to help her clemency bid. "I promise I will not let you down", Johnson said in an Associated Press interview.

After reuniting with her family, Johnson said, she plans to spend her time advocating for changes in the prison system.

"I'm kind of shocked I'm winning a fashion award when I'm naked most of the time", she joked during her acceptance speech.
