While the feature will make launching apps and using the keyboard faster on newer phones, it's also an indicator that Apple is catering to older phones as more people are hanging onto their devices for longer.

Apple showed off a raft of new features for the Mac, Apple Watch and iPhone at Tuesday's WWDC keynote.

"Apple is making changes to the core of how the browser works - surprisingly strong changes that should enable greater privacy", said Kevin Beaumont.

Facebook's privacy practices were called into question once again recently when a report claimed that the company had provided sensitive user data to at least 60 device makers, including the likes of Apple and Samsung. A feature called Screen Time will track how much time users are spending with particular apps.

"We've never been in the data business", Apple CEO Tim Cook told NPR on Monday.

The app switcher now allows you to swipe apps away without the need to hold down on them first.

Apple will attempt to frustrate tools used by Facebook to automatically track web users, within the next version of its iOS and Mac operating systems.

These functions which are supposed to manage better screen time, track app usage and limit phone's ability to distract, might help parents control their kids.

In addition to being able to have up to 32 people in a group video chat, users will also have access to Apple's camera features such as Animoji, filters and sticker packs to make the group chat fun. Apple is taking aim at Facebook's Like buttons, Disqus comments widgets and other third-party APIs that can be used for data collection, tracking and ad targeting. Inaugurating its yearly developers' conference, Apple appeared to be distinguishing itself from Facebook, which has gotten under the skin of privacy activists, and even demonstrated how its product could keep the social network sites from following subscribers on Apple apps and devices.

"It empowers you with insight and control", Federighi said.

A survey released in May by Pew Research Center found that 95 percent of teens in the United States have access to a smartphone, and 45 percent say they are online "almost constantly".
