Charge Against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens Dropped As He Resigns From Office

The prosecutor, Kimberly Gardner, announced her decision to drop the case this way: "I remain confident that we have the evidence required to pursue charges against Mr. Greitens", adding, "But sometimes, pursuing charges is not the right or just thing to do for our city or state".

Republican Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has resigned amid his sexual misconduct scandal.

Greitens also was indicted on felony invasion of privacy in February in St. Louis, stemming from an extramarital affair in 2015. Special prosecutor Jean Peters Baker plans to take a second look at the invasion of privacy case.

The governor says the past few months have been hard on him, his family, his team, his friends and the people he loves.

Gardner said in a Wednesday morning press conference, the most "fair and just way" to resolve the case, is to drop it.

Until now, Greitens has refused to resign, even as he faced possible impeachment over the scandals.

In his speech, Greitens said he is "not ideal", but maintains he has "not broken any laws or committed any offense worthy of this treatment". Legal harassment of colleagues, friends and campaign workers and it's clear that for the forces that oppose us, there is no end in sight.

Minutes before the press conference, multiple news sources reported the Missouri Highway Patrol had collected Lt. Gov. Mike Parson and they were on their way to Jefferson City.

Hours after Greitens delivers his State of the State speech, St. Louis television station KMOV broadcasts a story featuring a conversation secretly recorded between the governor's former hairdresser and her then-husband in 2015 in which she is heard saying she had a sexual encounter with Greitens.

"I came to office to fight for the people of Missouri, to fight for the forgotten", Greitens said.

The governor on Saturday also called Republican consultant Jeff Roe, who headed Greitens' aggressive public relations campaign, to inform Roe that he had chose to resign.

Parson, who will serve the remainder of Greitens' term through January 2020, pledged to carry out his new duties "with honor and integrity".
