As Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones testified in the Colin Kaepernick collusion case, Jones relayed a phone conversation he had with Trump.

"Tell everybody, you can't win this one", Trump told Jones, according to the report.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said Trump's statement "changed the dialogue".

Kneeling during the national anthem became a form of protest when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began doing so in 2016 to protest police brutality.

The NFL announced a new policy last week that allows players to protest during the national anthem by staying in the locker room but forbids them from sitting or taking a knee if they're on the field.

Owners had spent months deliberating how to handle the on-field demonstrations after Trump said a year ago that players who kneel during the anthem should be punished. Trump referred to kneeling players as a "son of a bitch".

A lack of capacity in pipelines or in rail cars to ship oil produced in Alberta is also hurting Canada's energy sector. Finance Minister Bill Morneau said the government would acquire the troubled pipeline expansion project on Tuesday.

Trump says Mexico will eventually pay for border wall
Mexico has long said it would not pay for a border wall and has chafed at Trump's repeated insistence otherwise. But the party is also defending 10 seats in states Trump won in 2016 - five of which Trump won by double digits.

It's a Winning Return for Serena Williams at the French Open
Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza got the better of Svetlana Kuznetsova in a first-round meeting of two former winners. Pliskova also broke to tie the game at 3-3. 80th win: Rafael Nadal celebrates victory over Italy's Simone Bolelli.

A separate question asked, "Do you think that NFL players who kneel during the national anthem are patriotic or unpatriotic?" Teams also will have the option to fine any team personnel, including players, for the infraction. "Of course. But I understand if they felt the need to protest".

"This is a very winning, strong issue for me", Trump reportedly said in a call with Jones.

That action spurred on hundreds of similar protests, with athletes across the country participating in similar protests of race relations in the United States and a failing criminal justice system.

The Journal reported that the depositions indicated that Trump's criticism of the players factored into the owners' discussions about the new anthem policy.

Per Beaton, the National Football League declined comment on the matter, citing the confidentiality that applies to the grievance proceedings.
