Trinamool sweeps panchayat elections in West Bengal, BJP finishes second

As far as Gram Panchayats are concerned, TMC has already won 744 Gram Panchayats whereas BJP has managed to win 61 whereas CPM and Congress have won 6 and 8 Gram Panchayats respectively. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the second position, has won 5,050 seats and is leading in another 50-odd seats.

The Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and other parties of the Left Front also staged a protest outside State Election Commission in Kolkata against the incidents of violence.

As per latest reports, the state's ruling party has won 20,277 Gram Panchayat (lowest tier) seats of 31,814 that were contested, while it was leading in 382 seats.

Kolkata: The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal took an early lead in all three tiers of the panchayat polls after almost five hours of counting on Thursday. In nearly all districts, the BJP has emerged second after the Trinamool Congress. "This is the type of results we are creating and expecting in future", he said. Congress has won 918 (29), followed by the Left Front, which won 1480 (and leading in 30) and 1614 seats have been won by independent candidates (who are leading in 33 seats).

However, the ruling TMC continues to be the dominant force in most districts.

However, BJP, which has been registering electoral growth in the state over the past two years, emerged as the major opposition by coming runners up in the elections.

The party - which barely had a presence in the 2013 polls - has come out as the clear number 2 in the state, replacing the Left.

Counting for the 48,650 seats in 3,358 gram panchayats and 9,217 seats in 341 panchayat samitis in West Bengal is underway. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has won 34 per cent of seats unopposed. "Had the elections been free and fair, we would have won 50 per cent seats at all the three levels of the panchayat", state BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the party workers for the massive win and dedicated the victory to the people.

The Central government on Wednesday again sought a report from the West Bengal government over the violence during panchayat elections in the state earlier this week that left at least 10 dead. In Howrah district, TMC is leading in 281 gram panchayat seats, while BJP is in second position with 4 seats; in East Midnapore district, TMC is leading in 390 seats and BJP in 14.
