Ramadan: Let's return to Allah, Amosun tells Muslims

Making the announcement in his palace in Sokoto, the Sultan said the commencement of the fast followed reports of sighting of the moon across various states of the federation which marked the end of the month of Shaaban 1439 AH.

Grand Mufti Al-Sheikh Abdel Jabbar Macarimbor called on Muslims all over the country to be united in preparation for Ramadan.

While fasting, Muslims must also abstain from sex, gossip and cursing.

"In accordance with Islamic law, Muslim Ummah are to commence fasting on Thursday accordingly".

Presidential hopeful, Prof Joshua Alabi has sent well wishes to Muslims as they begin the month of Ramadan.

The President prayed Allah to grant all Muslims the strength to successfully complete the fasting period.

President Buhari, who greeted the Muslims in Nigeria and across the world as they commenced the 30-day Ramadan fast, noted that Ramadan was a period to inculcate righteousness and discipline.

Felicitating with Muslims on the start of the Ramadan fast, the governor said they should not see the month as one of mere mandatory prayer, fasting and Iftar meals, but engage in total abstinence, probing soul-searching, honest repentance and infinite atonement.

In a message signed by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Adedayo Adeneye, the governor urged the Muslims to submit their spirit, soul and body, in total submission to Allah.

The Ramadan fast, in which food and even a sip of water is prohibited, is meant to bring the faithful closer to God and remind them of those less fortunate.

He said it was the duty of all, irrespective of religion, to also pray for the country.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims offer prayers (Salat), recite the Quran and do good deeds.
