Joe Hart has become the first high-profile omission from England's squad for the summer's World Cup after Gareth Southgate opted against selecting the national side's most experienced current player for the tournament in Russian Federation.

Sky Sports reports that Gareth Southgate has already decided against selecting Hart as third-choice goalkeeper, which suggests that Pope - a hitherto unknown number one prior to this season - will be taken as the squad back up goalkeeper.

Pope has been sensational since making his Premier League debut after Tom Heaton picked up an injury.

He was selected by Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate for the recent friendlies with The Netherlands and Italy, but was not given any game time.

In leaving out Hart, Southgate has chosen to ignore his most experienced player.

Months of speculation, scrutiny and intrigue come to a head tomorrow afternoon, when the 23 men charged with taking on the world's best are revealed.
