A former NY nanny was sentenced to life behind bars Monday for murdering two young children in her care five years ago in a case that tormented parents worldwide. In April, she was convicted of two counts of first degree murder and two counts of second degree murder.

Marina Krim told the judge that nanny Yoselyn Ortega instead destroyed her own family. Kevin Krim, a digital media executive at CNBC, believed hiring the nanny was necessary, he testified, because he was working 12-hour days.

55-year-old Yoselyn Ortega, who worked as a nanny, has appointed a sentence of life imprisonment without right to parole.

Ms Krim was afterwards found by police crying and crying hysterically, clutching for her living child. The mother and father' testimony made jurors weep through the emotional trial.

Murdered Lulu, six, and Leo, 20 months with their sister Nessie, three. Then I see the defendant.

When she arrived she saw the lights were off in the home, which puzzled her.

The case hinged on evidence presented about Ms. Ortega's mental health history and her state of mind at the time of the slayings, much of which countered her argument that she was in the grip of severe psychosis.

Ortega cut them both across the throat leaving the children no chance for survival.

"The other day I found myself on the corner of 76th [Street] and Columbus [Avenue], and I just stopped", he said, tears filling his eyes as he described looking into the lobby of the building where the murders took place.

Ortega said she wasn't feeling well but wasn't able to go to the doctor.

Both parents spoke in court on Monday.

She had been working for the Krim family for almost two years when she took the children to the back bathroom of their apartment and stabbed them to death in October 2012. "We called them Team Krim", Kevin said. "Unfair to us, unfair to the world". "This defendant to this day has shown no remorse". He said she never should have put the family, the jurors or the audience through it.

Ortega said Monday she was "very sorry for everything that happened".

"Although many wish me all the worst, my life is in the hands of God".

Judge Carro was not moved. "It was real", Krim told jurors.

"And they were lovely and odd", he testified, according to the New York Times.

At his request, doctors took him and Marina to an examination room, where the murdered children lay on gurneys, wrapped in sheets up to their chins, he testified. "They had this, like, sandy brown hair".
