Gas prices up to $3.09 in much of West Michigan

According to AAA-The Auto Club Group, more than 41.5 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, almost 5 percent more than last year and the most in more than a dozen years (2005). However, these higher prices are not keeping holiday travelers home, with automobile travel expected to increase for the fourth straight year, by almost 5 percent nationwide over last Memorial Day.

Tennessee's gas prices rose 3 cents in the last week, standing at $2.62 per gallon - the highest daily price since November 2014. Gas prices have gone up 19.8 cents from last month's average and have increased 53.3 cents from last year's average.

Experts say prices at the pump are still well below the all time high of $4.11 a gallon, in 2008. The traditional rule of thumb many gasoline dealers still rely on is that retail prices are about 70 cents higher than the NYMEX bulk price.

Gas prices are still climbing in northern New England.

As a result, she says 36 states are seeing gas prices that are a nickel or more expensive than last Monday.

Prices at the pump now top $3 per gallon all of the nation's 10 most expensive markets with California at $3.69 per gallon. A month ago it was $2.33 and one year ago it was $2.29.
