"This morning, First Lady Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition".

Melania, 48, is expected to remain at Walter Reed medical centre for the next few days.

President Donald Trump has departed a military hospital near Washington after visiting his wife, Melania, who underwent a procedure to treat a benign kidney condition. The operation was successful and there were no complications, she added.

The president said that it was a "successful procedure" and that his wife was "in good spirits".

The White House did not offer any additional details on Mrs Trump's condition. In opening remarks in the Senate, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., sent well wishes for "a speedy recovery to the first lady". It is a non-invasive procedure where a catheter is inserted into the primary artery leading to the non-cancerous mass, which then cuts off the blood flow causing the tumor to shrink. It can lead to pain and blood in urine as it grows or it could cause no symptoms and be found during routine imaging tests. Many times, embolization patients go home the same day or the next. The president sat in the front row as she spoke.

Another doctor, however, said Mrs. Trump was probably being kept in the hospital longer because of her position.
