Seven die in Australia's worst shooting for 22 years

A family of seven including four children was found dead with gunshot wounds on Friday at a rural property in southwest Australia in what could be the country's worst mass shooting in 22 years, police and news media said.

Their family released a statement on Saturday, saying they could not understand how the tragedy occurred.

"We are devastated by this shocking event".

"We thank the community for their support and ask that our privacy is respected as we grieve".

In Osmington that in Western Australia, was discovered seven bodies, four of them children.

"I wish to strongly emphasise police do not believe any other person is involved with these crimes".

Aaron Cockman has seen firsthand the emotional anguish Peter Miles had gone through in recent years.

Cynda and Peter were well known in the Margaret River area - she for her extensive community involvement and he for his longstanding and successful farm maintenance business.

The farm is located in Osmington, northeast of Margaret River.

Details have since emerged that Peter had recently been looking for work. "I think he's been thinking this through for a long time", he said. Officers arrived on the scene early Friday to find the bodies with bullet wounds, and recovered three rifles from the scene - all licensed to Peter Miles.

"I wanted someone nearby to check my property twice a week, or so".

Police are expected to be at the scene for several days.

The shooting happened in the small town of Osmington, close to Margaret River, a popular tourist destination renowned for its wine, surf and natural beauty. "My thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims, and also with the first responders and investigators as they piece together this tragic set of circumstances".

"[He was] just not someone who I would have thought was keen to find a new client or customer", he told Seven News Perth. But I don't want anyone to feel angry.

"A female adult was found deceased inside the main house and a female adult and four children were found deceased in what I would describe as a converted shed structure".
