The U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Army Research Laboratory (ARL) announced a new research and development partnership with Uber during the company's second annual Elevate conference in Los Angeles this week.

Instead of needing a long runway to manage takeoff and landing, they'll take off and land vertically. When the Olympics come to Los Angeles in 2028, Uber expects to have hundreds, if not thousands, of its aircraft in the skies. Those propellers are positioned on wings that are located far above the passenger bay, so riders don't have to duck the blades when they get in and out.

With this agreement, NASA says Uber will share its plans for an "urban aviation rideshare network" and that the space agency will use airspace management computer modeling and simulation methods to assess the potential impact.

San Francisco - Uber announced a partnership to study urban piloted aircraft in conjunction with the United States space agency Nasa, following a partnership in 2017 that focused on unpiloted drones. It'll also fly at between 1,000 and 2,000 feet and can last up to 60 miles before the electric vehicle's battery needs to be recharged. The company had been working on the concept of flying cars for quite some time. Uber announced NASA will help create industry standards, route paths, and FAA rules and procedures for the new mode of transportation.

To bring uberAIR to market, Uber plans to partner with three 'launch cities.' This will allow for a balance between focus and city diversity that will set the service up for long-term success.

Some of those firms appeared alongside Uber at the event with their own concept designs for what the flying taxis could look like. Meantime, aircraft manufacturers at the summit displayed prototypes of the VTOLs they're developing. But Uber isn't a company lacking in confidence and revealed that Dubai will now join Dallas and LA as the third major city to host demonstration flights of UberAir, as the service will be called, in 2020.

NASA and Uber have signed an agreement to ensure safe development of flying taxis in urban environments.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Uber and NASA are now working together to figure out how the Elevate vehicles can operate safely while flying at low altitude.
