'Paris Knife Attacker Was On Extremist Watchlist'

Shortly before 9:00pm (1900 GMT) a knife-wielding attacker struck on Rue Monsigny, close to Place de L'Opera, an area of central Paris filled with restaurants, bars and tourist attractions.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack.

A man killed a passer-by and wounded four others in the heart of Paris before being shot dead by police, French authorities said. A source told Reuters the attacker was not previously known to police.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, on Twitter, hailed the "cool and quick reaction of the police who neutralised the attacker".

Authorities are treating the attack as terror related, primarily because witnesses described him shouting "Allahu akbar", a refrain commonly used by jihadists when carrying out attacks.

The Islamic State group, by means of its affiliated information company, claimed accountability for the knife assault, which left a 29-year-old man lifeless and 4 others injured.

According to sources with knowledge of the case, the man attacked random people in the street.

Macron tweeted his praise for police who "neutralized the terrorist" and his thoughts for the victims. When police officers arrived minutes later, he threatened them and was shot dead, according to police union official Yvan Assioma.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted (in French): "Tonight, our city was bruised".

France has suffered a series of major Islamist attacks including the massacre at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 in Paris, and the 2016 Bastille Day truck attack in Nice that killed more than 80.
