Kelly on Undocumented Immigrants: 'They Don't Integrate Well, They Don't Have Skills'

White House chief of staff John Kelly said President Donald Trump is "somewhat embarrassed" by the special counsel's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. "When world leaders come in, it's kind of like you know Bibi Netanyahu [of Israel] is here and he - who's under investigation himself - and it's like, you know, you walk in and you know the first couple of minutes of every conversation might revolve around that kind of thing".

Kelly relayed an anecdote from a reporter he encountered who told him "Look you were our worst nightmare".

"Something that has gone on this long without any real meat on the bone, it suggests to me that there is nothing there, relative to our president", Kelly told NPR.

"It's not that things were a disaster that first six months but I believe they could have been better", he said. During his campaign announcement back in 2015, Trump infamously said Mexico was "sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us".

Kelly also kept up his tough line on immigration, even as he said people with temporary protected status who have been here for decades should get citizenship.

He set the stage for his announcement by hosting a 3 a.m., made-for-TV welcome home for three Americans held by Kim's government. Later on Thursday, Singapore's foreign ministry confirmed it would host the Trump-Kim summit next month.

He also revealed that he underwent extensive medical tests and has been told his elbow and forearm are in "pristine" condition. He will be treated with a procedure similar to acupuncture and hopes to avoid surgery. "The communication has to be there".

NPR has released several new portions of their interview with John Kelly, but there are a lot of people who are having a hard time taking his new remarks seriously. Only 13 percent of immigrants at that time didn't speak English at all, the census showed, which is far from the majority group Kelly referred to in the interview.

'They don't integrate well.

Kelly said he thinks Trump is 'a super smart guy'. "[.] They don't integrate well, they don't have skills", Kelly added. And I sympathize with the reason. I always give my opinion on everything.

His only regret is that he did not come into the job sooner, Kelly said. "He always listens. Sometimes he takes the opinion, sometimes he doesn't".
