Gleason claims that he talked to Stephen Dunleavy, a retired journalist, about the situation, and Dunleavy offered to talk to Trump about it.

He also told the Times that he had told elected officials about Schneiderman's behavior almost five years ago, and he said that the two women who came to him are not among the four who talked to the New Yorker.

A third woman contacted his office in 2013, he said, describing a similar story of abuse at the hands of Schneiderman.

Jane Mayer, one of the New Yorker writers whose article about Schneiderman earlier this week led to his resignation, tweeted that "not one source for our story on Schneiderman has any ties to Trump or Michael Cohen".

Gleason also asserted that he later received a call from Cohen that he believed confirmed Trump had heard about the allegations made against Schneiderman. "'Unfortunately, I had to advise this woman against reporting the incident to the Manhattan District Attorney Office" due to what he said was it past experience ignoring 'political corruption'.

Then Gleason got a call from Cohen.

Trump had predicted Schneiderman's demise in a tweet sent in September 2013, stating that he would be gone after the falls of fellow NY officials Anthony Weiner and Eliot Spitzer due to sex scandals. Dunleavy, Gleason said, discussed the allegations with Trump.

Gleason wrote that his office was contacted "some years ago" by two unrelated women who said Schneiderman was "sexually inappropriate" with them.

Remember those old tweets from President Trump going after Eric Schneiderman and calling him "worse than Spitzer or Weiner"? "I shared with him certain details of Schneiderman's vile attacks on these two women", Gleason wrote.

"During my communications with Mr. Cohen". "The extent of Mr. Cohen's memorializing any of our communications is unknown", he added, asking the court to seal any such records related to the conversation. "However, these two women's confidentiality, as victims of a sexual assault, should be superior to that of any unrelated subpoena".

Schneiderman's lawyer, Isabelle Kirshner, declined to comment. Lawyers for Cohen, Trump, the Trump organization and Avenatti all have expressed concerns about files that could be subject to attorney-client privilege being seen by prosecutors investigating Cohen.

Schneiderman's number two, Solicitor General Barbara Underwood, was sworn in as acting Attorney General on Tuesday, but Albany's pols could appoint his successor with a majority vote in both the Assembly and Senate.
