Active shooter reported at California high school

One victim was shot in the arm at a California high school on Friday morning and a suspect was detained, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Soon after responding to Highland, the Sherriff's Department also responded to shots fired at Manzanita Elementary School, also in Palmdale, at about 7:30 a.m. local time.

Deputies are searching the school.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed deputies are at Highland High School.

Another 14-year-old male was taken into custody as multiple agents, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, remain on the scene.

There are 4,000 students enrolled at the the school.

"All of the Palmdale Elementary Schools were put on lockdown".

Highland High School shooter is reportedly in custody.

A 14-year-old has been arrested after a classmate was shot in the arm with a rifle at their high school in California. Some students and staff members said they were initially were concerned that they might be facing a mass shooting situation.

An elementary school, Manzanita Elementary, is about a mile away.

The shooting was reported at Highland High School in the town of Palmdale, 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, at 7am local time. No further details have been released, and police would not confirm if there was actually a person with a gun on campus.

"There were some kids running from the school, and security and sheriff were telling people to go home", she said.

Eyewitness Katharina Smith, a 16-year-old student at Highland High student, said she saw "a tonne of police racing toward school".
