McCain urges Senate to reject Central Intelligence Agency nomination

Manchin issued his statement shortly after attending Haspel's confirmation hearing as a member of the Senate intelligence committee. McCain noted: "Ms. Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing".

"I know from personal experience that the abuse of prisoners will produce more bad than good intelligence". Trump later told the Conservative Political Action Conference that "except for one Senator, who came into a room at three o'clock in the morning and went like that" -Trump gave a thumbs-down - "we would have had health care (reform), too".

McCain and Trump have frequently been at odds since Trump was a candidate in the 2016 election.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX): "Opponents of the Haspel nomination for Central Intelligence Agency who voted for former Director Brennan under Obama are going to have to explain double standard for Trump and Haspel".

'CIA has learned some tough lessons, ' Haspel said, explaining that in retrospect the agency was not prepared to conduct the detention and interrogation program employed after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by al Qaeda militants. "Gina Haspel is an incredibly experienced and qualified nominee to serve as @CIA Director, and I look forward to supporting her nomination".

But Haspel could face a hard time being confirmed.

"Senators should block this nomination". Trump has called those investigations a 'witch hunt'.

The Republican Cheney also denied the programs were torture and said critics of the programs were attempting to "rewrite history".

Haspel said the United States needs to do more to address China's "overt and illicit efforts to steal" US technology.

Haspel could face a hard time being confirmed. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Many Republican senators say they are still undecided. She said, however, that she would not support destroying them today.

A 2014 Senate Intelligence Committee investigation concluded that these methods were 'not an effective way of obtaining accurate information or gaining detainee cooperation'. While not confirmed, Cindy McCain made her feelings clear in a tweet shortly after the reports surfaced. The documents are classified.

Former Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA): "No one is better prepared, more focused, or more capable to carry out that mission than is Gina Haspel".
