On the stage, Google vice president Aparna Chennapragada explained how the app can be unreliable at times, where users end up taking a long time to figure out which direction they have to go. Whether you're meeting up with friends, hosting out-of-towners in your city or simply exploring someplace new, Google Maps will help you make quick decisions and find the best spots. "So we asked ourselves, what if the camera can help us here?" The camera will reflect what's around you, and show exactly where you are walking and which way to walk.

This new feature will now allow users to know about the latest happenings in their nearby areas. Down below navigation on Maps will also be visible. Rather, the app is becoming an increasingly social experience.

We'll find a new For You tab, with personalized selections of activities and events near your current location, whether it's our home or a hotel room when you travel. The Explore tab also has a list called "Foodie List" that shows the places that are trending in that area.

Yesterday during the Google I/O keynote, Google showed off work it has been doing to combine the power of AI and computer vision, then implementing that into an existing product like Google Maps and Street View. The company collects so much data from users that they are able to make intelligent predictions about various things. This is done with the help of machine learning which is based on factors such as what Google knows about a business, food/beverage preferences selected in Google Maps, places a user has been to, and whether they've rated a restaurant or added to a list. Needless to say, these matches change as your preferences change over time.

Google has also made a group planning easy. This feature lets you create a list of places that can be shared with your family and friends. This means that you may also have to give access to your phone's camera along with your location to access Google Maps in your phone in near future.
