Measles can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after a person has left an area, so the times listed below reflect that window. Individuals who have not been vaccinated or otherwise shown to be immune to measles are at risk. Symptoms of measles are: Fever (often high); cough; runny nose; red eyes; and rash (usually starting on the face and spreading down the body). Three to five days after these symptoms appear, a rash will break out beginning with white spots inside the mouth.

If you ere born before 1957, have received two doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, have had measles disease, or have a lab test confirming immunity, you are considered immune to or protected from measles.

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department confirmed Saturday that an adult resident of the county was diagnosed with the measles virus.

The Department of Health recommends that people contact health care professionals prior to going in for care as a safety precaution.

The individual was on a tour bus travelling from Niagara Falls, N.Y., to Washington D.C. on May 2.
