We have only spent N100m recalling Melaye, says INEC

By Oyibo Salihu Lokoja A Senior Magistrate's Court sitting in Lokoja, yesterday ordered that Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West at the National Assembly be reminded along with two others in police custody till June 11, 2018.

The counsel however said the commissioner of police Legal evaded to be served copies of his application on the ground that he must be served in Abuja.

The interim order, the Chief Judge explained was to enable the senator receive medical attention, following the lack of facilities at the Police Clinic in Lokoja where he is been held in police custody.

The defendants counsel also pleaded with the trial judge to consider the bail application, saying his client has been with the police since April 24, and was released on bail on Wednesday by an Abuja magistrate court only to be re- arrested by the police.

Earlier, counsel to the defendant, Mike Ozekhome, had argued that Senator Dino Melaye was a chronic asthmatic patient who gasped for breath on Thursday while being arraigned and had to be given his special inhaler right there in the courtroom and in the presence of the trial magistrate, Sulyman Abdalah.

At Thursday's plenary in the House of Representatives, speaker Dogara Yakubu urged the police to be professional and careful with Mr Melaye's case, saying his health should be prioritized.

"If any law has been breached, the police must ensure that his life is secured first".

"I have not seen in any country where someone is arraigned on a stretcher to take pleas".

The Senator who was denied bail on Thursday is facing trial for charges related to gun running and Kidnapping.
