More than half of Gen Zers identified with 10 of the 11 feelings associated with loneliness, according to the survey, including feeling like people around them are not really with them (69 percent), feeling shy (69 percent) and feeling like no one really knows them well (68 percent).

The study, published by the global health service company Cigna, found that 46 percent of USA adults report sometimes or always feeling lonely and 47 percent report feeling left out. Cigna is launching an effort to help address the loneliness epidemic and improve Americans' overall mental wellness and vitality.

Loneliness actually has the same effect on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, which makes it even more risky than obesity, says Cigna, citing a 2010 report.

The report, from health insurer Cigna and pollster Ipsos, revealed nearly 50 percent of Americans always feel alone or left out.

For the study, Cigna and the market research firm Ipsos surveyed more than 20,000 USA adults ages 18 and older.

In 2017, she presented new research linking loneliness and social isolation to a number of health risks at the American Psychological Association's annual convention.

The earlier studies showed that Americans between 20 to 43% feel lonely.

It has been observed that several young people feel lonely and lack companionship than the senior citizens. However, this does not hold true for single parents or guardians, who report to feel lonelier than the other adults who live alone. Possible loneliness scores range from 20 to 80, with the national average a 44.

Respondents who had too much or too little of any of these activities had higher reported scores of loneliness.

Apart from this, the studies have also shown that use of social media has a link to depression and even suicide among teenagers.

"We view a person's physical, mental and social health as being entirely connected", Mr. Cordani said. Contrary to common misconceptions, social media use isn't a good predictor of loneliness. "What that means really is that I could have a thousand or ten thousand friends on Facebook, but it's the meaningful in-person relationships that I have with other people that actually keep me from becoming lonely". People who strike the "just right" balance of time with family, physical activity and sleep reported low scores of loneliness.

Although, the lonely aren't alone.
