After a lengthy delay, Pablo De Blasis stepped up to take the spot-kick for Mainz, beating Alexander Schwolow in the seventh minute of stoppage time to open the scoring for his side.

Players of Mainz 05 and Freiburg were astonished when referee Guido Winkmann was notified by video referee Bibiana Steinhaus, who was watching in Cologne, that he should check a replay of a handball incident just before his half-time whistle. The 2-0 win sees Mainz leapfrog Freiburg in the Bundesliga table on goal difference, climbing out of the relegation zone at the expense of their defeated opponents.

Daniel Brosinski tried his luck before half-time and his shot took a deflection off Freiburg defender Marc Oliver Kempf's hand.

VAR confusion reigned in the Bundesliga on Monday evening as Mainz and Freiburg players had to be recalled from the half-time break after a penalty was belatedly awarded.

De Blasis added a second with ten minutes remaining, but there is likely to be significant fallout from this match (and that decision in particular) in the coming days.

Footage from broadcaster Eurosport during the incident showed that players from both teams were already in their respective dressing rooms when Winkmann requested they return to the field. The Mainz forward then picked out his teammate De Blasis who slotted home - luckily off the post.
