Derek Jeter: Attending games at Yankee Stadium would be 'awkward situation'

"I'm not going. I just want to let everybody know, I'm not going to NY".

A question that Jeter didn't get is why he'd feel awkward returning to Yankee Stadium.

Second baseman Starlin Castro, traded to Miami as part of the Stanton deal, was 0 for 3. As part of the deal, the Yankees reportedly took on $265 million of the remaining $295 million owed to Stanton over the final 10 years of his current contract.

"It's still early. We've played 12 games. But there's no bad blood on this side".

Stanton gets his first at-bats against his former team Monday night when the New York Yankees host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a two-game series.

Stanton, who became the first Marlins' league MVP last season after a memorable 59 home-run season was one of several standout players traded primarily for prospects in the offseason including Christian Yelich (Brewers), Dee Gordon (Mariners) and Marcell Ozuna (Cardinals).

Eight days later, Stanton will attempt to satisfy fans and will be facing a familiar opponent with mostly unfamiliar faces. "I mean, we were very honest with each other in our meetings and that's the business side of it, but there's no bad blood on this side".

It took just one home game for the fan base to boo the hell out of Giancarlo Stanton for striking out five times.

Miami allowed double-digit runs for the third time and double-digit hits for the sixth time and hopes Jarlin Garcia's second career start goes as well as his first.

"Not really [surprised], it's New York", Mattingly said.

"It's New York. You struggle, you pay, right?" That's all there is to it. It's a day-in, day-out place. He last visited Yankee Stadium in May to have his number retired and his plaque dedicated in Monument Park. I'm not surprised by it. "When you come here. you have no collateral, so you've got to go show it".

Mattingly, a former American League MVP and a.307 hitter for the Yankees over his 14-year career, said dealing with slumps in NY was tough no matter how intense the crowd or media criticism became.

"It's like growing up in the same family with the same parents", Mattingly said. "I don't think you ever try to judge a start or judge a player over a 12-game stretch", Jeter explained.

Manager Aaron Boone: "I don't read into it that much". So, I might as well get out in front of it and say, I'm not going. "If you keep playing well, you can wind up wherever you want to be". He was appointed captain by owner George Steinbrenner from 1991-95, a role held by Jeter from 2003-14.

Mattingly thinks Stanton will learn to deal with the rough patches over time as the positive results begin to materialize.

He praised Jeter for being clear and confident about what he intends to do long term, although most of the manager's direct communication is with the team's general manager, Mike Hill. "It's just a different place". I just know Derek Jeter and I know he has a lot of things on his schedule.
