He continued: "It always struck me and still strikes me as unlikely, and I woulda' been able to say with high confidence about any other president I dealt with, but I can't".

Comey's firing came as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was probing possible connections between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia's meddling in the US election.

Comey said in the exclusive interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, which aired at 10 p.m. on Sunday, that it is "possible, but I don't know" whether Russian Federation has evidence to back up the allegations about Trump's Moscow trip.

- Comey found something unusual about the president's attitude toward Russian Federation.

The insult slinging has officially begun, and neither Trump nor Comey minced their words. Trump has strongly denied the allegation, and Comey says that it appeared the president wanted it investigated to reassure his wife, Melania Trump. "If he hadn't, he should've invited someone or asked who else was going to be there", Conway said.

In an excerpt shown Saturday, Comey says his belief that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential election was a factor in his decision to disclose the investigation into her emails.

Comey's disclosure shortly before the election that the FBI had reopened its investigation into her email use enraged Democrats.

Trump has not tweeted since the airing of the interview.

Comeys explosive book, which is apparently highly critical of Trump, will hit the bookshelves next week.

Comey has faced harsh criticism from both Republicans and Democrats and his book gives him a chance to defend his actions, according to CNN.

Comey's response to Russian Federation having compromising material on President Trump also was maddening to many as he vacillated-simply saying it's "possible"-leaving a major issue extremely open-ended". James Comey, who regularly dispenses his wisdom and bon mots on Twitter, was "interviewed" by Clinton foundation donor George Stephanopoulos.

Sarah Kendzior, a political writer, chose to focus on Mr Comey's ABC interview, criticising "superficial questions".

Trump's tweet came the morning after Comey gave his first televised interview since he was unceremoniously fired last May while overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election.

In a Quinnipiac University poll published last month, 84 percent of Republicans approved of Trump's job performance, and only 31 percent said he is not a good role model for children. Comey said he did not remember "consciously thinking" about the election results as he chose to disclose that the FBI had reopened its investigation into candidate Clinton's email use.

"If colleagues of ours believe I am lying about when I made this decision, please urge them to contact me privately so we can have a conversation about this", Comey told lawmakers at the time. "It's possible, but I don't know".

In his testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee past year, Comey said he believes the President asked him to "drop any investigation of Flynn", a reference to former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Some also felt Comey brazenly admitted to illegal acts in the interview, which should be prosecuted. Flynn has since pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is now cooperating with the special counsel. "People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values".
