Meanwhile, in a new Twitter storm, US President Donald Trump on Sunday lashed out at former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, who he had fired past year citing his inability to lead America's top law enforcement agency, PTI reported.

Comey's interview comes ahead of the publication of his book "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership".

"I'm not trying to that, by the way, suggest that President Trump is out breaking legs and, you know, shaking down shopkeepers", Comey said, according to the ABC transcript.

Of Trump's practice of not criticising Russian President Vladimir Putin, Comey said, "I don't know what's behind that".

'I did not go into the business about- people peeing on each other, I just thought it was a weird enough experience for me to be talking to the incoming president of the United States about prostitutes in a hotel in Moscow.

"More and more lies", Comey said. "What she did was really sloppy", Comey said.

There is no indication Mr Comey is under investigation for doing either.

According to the transcript and video of the interview posted online, Comey describes warning Trump about what may be the most infamous allegation in a dossier of claims involving Trump and Russian Federation, parts of which remain unverified.

"The lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organisation above morality and above the truth", Comey said.

"Our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country", Comey told ABC's George Stephanopoulos. Comey, Trump tweeted, "was making decisions based on the fact that he thought she was going to win, and he wanted a job".

Comey and Stephanopoulos spoke in-depth about what makes an ethical leader, and when tough leadership becomes detrimental.

But Comey also would not rule out the possibility that Trump was compromised by a Russian intelligence operation.

Asked whether Comey is someone he would describe as a "slime ball" - a term Trump has used twice in tweets - Ryan said in an interview broadcast Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that "I don't speak like that".

Asked how freakish that meeting with Trump was, Comey said: "Very weird".

Comey also said he thinks it's possible that Trump might be compromised by the Russians.

The White House and Republican Party have launched an effort to discredit Comey as outlets, including NPR, began reporting on the book's contents last week.

Comey is set to release his explosive memoir, "a higher loyalty" this week.

However he insisted he would have still sent the letter to congress which announced the FBI was re-opening investigations into Mrs Clinton's email, just days before the election, even if he knew the letter would elect Mr Trump. So far, 19 people have been charged in the investigation.

Comey also spoke about the Clinton investigation, revealing that his certainty of her victory may have played a role in the probe.

Asked whether he believed Mr Trump should be impeached, Mr Comey replied, "I hope not because I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty bound to do directly".

Trump attacked him on Twitter.

'People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values'.

But it's not as if Comey's view of the President represents a sudden shock to the electorate.

In his tweet, Trump says: "Unbelievably, James Comey states that Polls, where Crooked Hillary was leading, were a factor in the handling (stupidly) of the Clinton Email probe".
