Asked to comment on possible US strikes, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said Thursday that "it's necessary to avoid any steps that may fuel tensions in Syria".

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the goal of the groundless reports about alleged chemical attacks was to provide cover for terrorists and justify the use of military force against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump held a meeting Thursday afternoon with his team to discuss the situation. "Yes, every day since the beginning of the week, our teams are working closely together and we will have decisions to make when the times comes, when we will judge it to be useful and effective", Macron said.

A White House statement released later said the United States is continuing to assess intelligence and is engaged in conversations with its partners and allies.

In London, British Prime Minister Theresa May held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss support for United States action against the Syrian regime.

The Kremlin spokesman is warning the USA and its allies against any steps that could destabilize the situation in Syria.

Federal Aviation Administration rules already prohibited American airlines from flying over Syria, but carriers outside Europe also reacted to the Eurocontrol warning.

"We haven't laid out any specific actions we plan to take", she added.

Earlier, the US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russian Federation should "get ready" for the firing of missiles at Syria as the US continues to affirm that the Syrian government was behind an alleged chemical attack on Saturday. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!" he tweeted, without ruling out attacks.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday tweeted that Russian Federation shouldn't be allied with a "Gas Killing Animal", in reference to Assad whose regime is accused of carrying out the attack on Douma, which activists and rescuers say killed at least 40 people.

The president made his latest statement in a tweet Thursday morning.

Trump - who a year ago ordered a missile strike on a Syrian air base after sarin was used in the town of Khan Sheikhun - warned that there would be a "big price to pay".

More than 13,500 Syrian rebel fighters and their families left Douma this month under a so-called evacuation deal between the rebels and the Russian military, a top ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government.

At stake in Syria is the potential for confrontation, if not outright conflict, between the USA and Russian Federation, former Cold War foes whose relations have deteriorated in recent years over Moscow's intervention in Ukraine, its interference in the 2016 US presidential election and its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. "There's enough verification that the Syrians dropped chemicals out of helicopters in barrels using the type of nerve agent that they like to use on their citizens and it's a weapon of mass destruction".

Syria and its ally Russian Federation deny such an attack happened.
