The U.S. -led strike was a response to a purported chemical attack on civilians in the Syrian town of Douma on April 7.

Russia, which has military forces deployed in Syria in support of the government, warned that United States air strikes risked starting a war.

"In 2013, President [Vladimir] Putin and his government promised the world that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons", Trump said.

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, told reporters "The situation (in Syria) is very unsafe".

Speaking at the United Nations on Friday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley pushed back against denials by both the Syrian and Russian governments that chemical agents were used in the weekend's attack. Putin, in his condemnation Saturday of the airstrikes, called for an emergency U.N. Security Council session and described the assault as the latest in two decades of American-led interventions that, in the Kremlin's telling, have unwound the worldwide order.

More than 40 people are thought to have died following the attack on the rebel-held town of Douma, drawing global condemnation and prompting Washington and its allies to consider a military response.

"Russia and Syria's other main supporter, Iran, must place pressure on the regime to end its abuse of worldwide law and human rights".

He noted that OPCW's report didn't contain any mention of BZ, adding that Russian Federation will ask the chemical weapons watchdog for an explanation.

Asked whether the USA military was ready to conduct an attack in Syria if ordered, Mattis replied, "We stand ready to provide military options if they're appropriate, as the president determined".

Washington is still willing to cooperate with Moscow on the Syrian issue despite the heightened tensions following the U.S. -led airstrike on Syria, U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said in a statement Saturday.

"We're still assessing the intelligence, ourselves and our allies", Mattis said.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council Friday that "there is no military solution to the conflict".

"Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible", added the envoy, after President Donald Trump directly called out his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over his support for the Assad regime.

Earlier, Russian's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said the attack had been staged by foreign agents.

He said: "We're having a number of meetings today, we'll see what happens".

Russia's theories about last Saturday's suspected chemical attack are reminiscent of previous contradictions.

"If there are problems, they must be solved at the negotiating table", she said.

This was stated by U.S. Ambassador to Russian Federation.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said France has proof that the Syrian government launched chlorine gas attacks and that France would not tolerate "regimes that think everything is permitted". It also said Russian officers found no patients with chemical attack symptoms at a local hospital, and no indication of any burials of victims.
