"Sex and the City" actress and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon on Wednesday called for NY to legalize recreational marijuana to reduce racial inequality and raise millions of tax dollars.

Nixon is challenging Cuomo in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

"There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity", she said via a video she released on social media. It endorsed Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo four years ago.

Many progressives and liberals are unsatisfied with Cuomo's reign as governor, who's seen as a more moderate Democrat, which is what spurred Nixon to run for the nomination.

She announced her campaign in mid-March, running left of 2-term Governor Andrew Cuomo.

When the nod becomes official at the party's nominating convention next month, it would give Nixon a critical line on the November ballot if she loses the Democratic primary in September.

The party's executive director Bill Lipton accused Cuomo on Friday of trying to stiff arm party loyalists into backing his candidacy, threatening to pressure unions who support him to end funding for certain activist groups.

The former "Sex and the City" star received more than 90 percent of party members' votes at their annual committee meeting.

"Big donors and powerful political insiders have held too much power in Albany for too long", Lipton said in a statement. In the video, tweeted by Nixon, she states that "The consequences follow people for the rest of their lives", Nixon explains, "making it harder to get jobs or housing".
