Brush fire burns near University of Maryland, College Park

The fire closed portions of Bungletown, Green Creek and Alberene roads and had burned about 40 acres late Thursday, fed by strong winds and dry conditions.

The governor's burn ban makes it unlawful for any person to set fire to any forest, grass, woods, wildlands, or marshes; to build a bonfire or fire; to burn or ignite fireworks; or to burn trash or other materials outdoors in any of the listed counties.

Woodward County Emergency Management Director Matt Lehenbaur said a separate fire near Woodward has burned more than 120,000 acres and forced the evacuation of about 450 people from their homes, but no injuries are reported.

Officials reports that containment of a 60,000-acre (24,282-hectare) fire straddling the New Mexico-Texas line was at 90 percent in New Mexico and 75 percent in Texas, where fire officials said one home and another building were lost. The estimated size of that fire was changed from 115,000 to 59,000 acres because of more accurate mapping, Finch-Walker said. "Anything that can be done to minimize fires will help to keep both our firefighters and the public safe".
