For many South Africans, the most memorable image of Madikizela-Mandela is her punching the air in a clenched-fist salute as she walked hand-in-hand with Mandela out of Victor Verster prison, near Cape Town, on February 11, 1990.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed have paid glowing tributes to late Winifred "Winnie" Madikizela-Mandela, describing her as a strong and fearless woman.

During her husband's 27-year incarceration, Madikizela-Mandela campaigned tirelessly for his release and for the rights of black South Africans.

He also said that Cape Town International Airport should be named after her.

When Ms Madikizela-Mandela returned from exile she became involved with a group of young men known as the Mandela United Football Club, who were widely blamed for violence in Soweto.

The official funeral proceedings at the stadium will bring together political rivals‚ including the ANC's Cyril Ramaphosa and the EFF's Julius Malema‚ both of whom also joined her at the 80th birthday party.

The panelists each shared their personal memories of Madikizela-Mandela.
