Authorities also recovered debris and personal items confirm that a vehicle seen plunging into a storm-swollen Northern California river last week belonged to a family that went missing.

It could take several weeks to determine whether it's the body of one of three children still missing after the crash because lengthy DNA analysis may be needed for identification, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office says.

The 31-metre drop killed the women, both 39, and their children Markis Hart, 19; Jeremiah Hart, 14; and Abigail Hart, 14.

The bodies of Jennifer and Sarah Hart and three of their six kids were found in and around their SUV. The family was reported missing that Sunday.

A search team found the body about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of where the family's SUV fell into the rain-swollen Eel River last week, Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman told a news conference in the community of Leggett.

The California Highway Patrol and Mendecino County Sheriff and Coroner's Office have not returned messages left about the case as of 2:20 p.m. Wednesday. The authorities were hunting for one additional few children: Hannah Devonte, 15; along with Sierra.

Nearly eight days after the family of Sandeep Thottapilly went missing in the Eel River in Northern Mendocino County, California, a body suspected to be of one of the family members has been found. Officials found no skid marks to indicate sudden acceleration or braking, according to a search-warrant affidavit.

The Hart's former foster child, Lee, recently opened up about her experience.

The department tried to contact the family at their home the day that it received the complaint, March 23, but were unsuccessful.

Last August, soon after the Harts moved into their rural home, neighbors Bruce and Dana DeKalb said a child rang their doorbell, seeking sanctuary from abuse.
