National Guard troops headed for West Texas to restore 'control'

The main objective is to provide support for the Department of Homeland Security's mission to secure the U.S. -Mexico border, with a mission end-date of September 30.

The U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson sector will host a press conference in Nogales Friday afternoon regarding Operation Guardian Shield.

A Defense Department memo states the National Guard personnel will not perform law enforcement functions or "interact with migrants or other persons detained" without Mattis' approval.

The new contingent of California Guard members being deployed could be posted at the border, the coast and elsewhere statewide, Brown said.

President George W. Bush and President Obama both sent guardsmen to the southern border during their terms.

Brown said California's troops would join an existing program to combat transnational drug crime, firearms smuggling and human trafficking.
