After the race, Hosking paid tribute to her teammates.

It was the second Commonwealth Games medal for Hosking, who also won a bronze in the road race in Delhi in 2010.

Wilson's victory over Canadian Ryan Bester triggered the sort of wild scenes normally seen at a football match as the 26-year-old - nicknamed "Discotheque" for his penchant for visiting nightclubs - peeled off to soak in the adulation of the home crowd.

It was her first and only fight on the Gold Coast, after being afforded a bye in the quarter-finals.

Yesterday Hosking admitted she needed to change late previous year and Jones and CA were both among the "team behind the team" she thanked.

"Obviously I couldn't help myself when it came down to the moment - chucked the shirt off, didn't know where it went, but it was all on the groove".

"I did get a bit emotional at times and a bit devastated, thinking, 'What if they replace me?'" she said.

Commonwealth Games organising committee chairman Peter Beattie said they had worked hard with the Australian government on the entry system and he "encouraged" the 6,000 visiting athletes and officials not to breach the terms of their visas.

"This is for Australia", said Wilson, who admitted he had got the idea from countryman Kelvin Kerkow's bare-chested jig of joy after winning bowls gold at the 2006 Melbourne Games.

"I wouldn't have gone for it if I didn't think I could do it. I think that I've proved now that you can really do it even if everyone else thinks that you can't".

With 10km to go, Garfoot and Elvin continued to apply pressure and Hosking just had to hold on to set herself up for a sprint finish.

"She was always just out of reach from the English girl", Horn said.

Local road cyclists Hosking and von Hoff had no such problems, winning their respective women's and men's races.
