Ewoks invade Battlefront 2 in the next update, premium currency returns

The limited-time mode that we mentioned before is Ewok Hunt, and it involves clearing out a platoon of Stormtroopers or holding out against an extremely punishing Ewok assault.

The catch is that the Imperials, much like the real-world force they're modeled after, can not survive an extended war of attrition: Players start the mode as either an Ewok or a Stormtrooper, but every Stormtrooper felled respawns as an Ewok. When someone playing one of the Empire's foot soldiers dies, they rejoin the game as an Ewok, whittling down the survivors until they're all eliminated or they last long enough to be extracted. Players will be able to purchase those new appearances, as EA calls them, either with in-game credits or crystals. Now EA plans to honor that with the latest Star Wars Battlefront 2 update and the addition of a new mode where you can play as a small, furry warrior.

To say things for Star Wars Battlefront 2 have been rough since its launch would be putting things lightly, with its controversial loot box progression system getting such negative feedback, the developers completely reworked progression. The Crystals represent the micro-transaction system, as you will be able to buy them with real money. The Ewoks win if they wipe out the Stormtroopers, while the troopers claim victory if they can hold out until an extraction team arrives to save them from the marauding, three-foot-tall floof-beasts.

I'll admit, as a kid Return of the Jedi was my favorite Star Wars movie, and I have kind of a soft spot for the Ewoks. Pairing the return of microtransactions with some of Star Wars' most divisive characters is a...bold choice.

What makes it worse (for the stormtroopers at least) is that the mode also takes a page out of Halo's "Infection" gametype.

The update goes live on April 18 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and includes various other tweaks and balance fixes.
