Every extra drink could shorten your lifespan by 30 minutes

Those drinking more than five glasses of wine or pints of beer each week are at greater risk of a fatal aneurysm, a study finds. The new study, led by researchers at the University of Cambridge, showed that drinking more than the recommended amount of alcohol can damage our hearts and limit life expectancy.

Since the researchers are in the United Kingdom, they worked with the UK's drinking recommendations, which were lowered in 2016 to no more than 14 units of alcohol each week, or six pints of beer or six glasses of wine.

The study included data from 600,000 drinkers in 19 countries. Half the group reported drinking more than six glasses of wine per week and 8.4 percent drank more than 21 glasses per week, according to report.

Lead author Dr Angela Wood, of Cambridge University, said: "The key message of this research for public health is that, if you already drink alcohol, drinking less may help you live longer and lower your risk of several cardiovascular conditions".

Figures increase if more alcohol is consumed, with those who drink 18 or more drinks a week, losing up to five years of life. It does reduce the chance of a non-fatal heart attack.

It also showed that drinking at any level increased the risk of cardiovascular illnesses.

But they said "on balance" there are no health benefits from drinking and further research was needed to explore the link. The decision was hotly debated and criticized at the time, but the new study supports the maximum of 14 units a week for both men and women set out by England's chief medical officer.

Victoria Taylor, senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, said the study seemed to "broadly reinforce" Government guidelines.

'This is a massive and very impressive study.

'But above two units a day, the death rates steadily climb.

"The paper estimates a 40-year-old drinking four units a day above the guidelines [the equivalent of drinking three glasses of wine in a night] has roughly two years' lower life expectancy, which is around a 20th of their remaining life". Consuming two bacon sandwiches a week or sitting watching a hour of television per day is statistically more unsafe for long-term health.

Each unit of alcohol consumed above the U.K.'s recommended daily guidelines takes about the same amount of life as a cigarette, according to The Guardian.

'Of course it's up to individuals whether they think this is worthwhile'.
