Broidy's resignation followed a Friday Wall Street Journal report that Michael Cohen, President Trump's embattled personal attorney, had negotiated $1.6 million in payments to a former Playboy model who said Broidy had impregnated her.

Los Angeles-based investor Elliott Broidy, who has been a top fundraiser for Donald Trump and the party, issued a statement Friday acknowledging that he "had a consensual relationship" with the woman, who got pregnant. He represented Clifford in her 2016 deal with Cohen, and also negotiated a separate payment between Playboy model Karen McDougal and the publisher of the National Enquirer about her alleged affair with Trump.

Broidy confirmed the existence of an affair and said he did work with Cohen.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news of Broidy's settlement.

"At the end of our relationship, this woman shared with me that she was pregnant", he said. "She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this hard period", he said.

A person familiar with the agreement between Broidy and the woman, who was not identified, said Cohen used the same pseudonyms he made for Trump and Daniels.

According to The Journal, the deal was negotiated late past year and blocks the woman from disclosing details of her relationship with Broidy.

The revelation shines an even brighter light on Cohen, who is already under pressure after his office was raided by investigators seeking records related to payments to two women who claim they had sexual relationships with Trump.

Broidy, who initially backed Sen. Broidy claims that Cohen learned about the matter from Davidson then contacted Broidy, who agreed to hire Cohen to negotiate a deal.

Broidy apologized to his family in his statement: "It is unfortunate that this personal matter between two consenting adults is the subject of national discussion just because of Michael Cohen's involvement".

An attorney for Cohen did not return requests for comment Friday.

Cohen has been a staple in headlines since the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his hotel room and office in NY on Monday.

Broidy was a major fund-raiser for George W. Bush.

Broidy's name, meanwhile, has also come up in connection with the Russian Federation investigation as Mueller has looked into whether foreign governments sought to push policies favorable to them within the Trump campaign or administration.

Broidy later served as vice chairman for one of President Trump's primary fundraising arms during the 2016 election and had the same position for the president's inaugural committee. Cohen received $250,000-about 15 percent of the value of the woman's payment-for his role arranging the deal for Broidy, CNBC reported Friday. Cohen, Daniels and Davidson signed the agreement. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has alleged that she had a sexual encounter with Mr. Trump more than a decade ago, and is working with federal authorities.

McDougal has sued to break free of her contract so she can speak freely, arguing that her story about Trump is "core political speech entitled to the highest protection under the law".
