This photo provided Friday, Aug. 7, 2015 by New York Police Department shows packets of synthetic marijuana seized after a search warrant was served at a newsstand in Brooklyn, N.Y. On Wednesday, the number of cases climbed to 118, including three deaths, the health department reported.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a national alert patients with severe, unexplained bleeding may be additional cases. Three samples of synthetic marijuana tested by the CDC were found to contain brodifacoum, a powerful and long-lasting anticoagulant. IL reported seven more cases on Tuesday, bringing the nationwide total to at least 116. "The recent cases of severe bleeding are evidence of the harm synthetic cannabinoids can cause". The chemicals bind to the same brain receptors as THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, but they are different and more risky chemicals.

Synthetic pot, often sold under the names K2 and Spice, is a chemically manufactured product that mimics the psychoactive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) but with wide ranging and often "unpredictable" outcomes.

However, several court-appointed forensic experts tore down their claims by stating that mice don't usually have a thing for pot. "Synthetic cannabinoids in general are not safe and this is one example of not knowing what chemicals are in the product. It is hard to know what's in them or what your reaction to them will be". Bleeding from the eyes and ears is also possible after use, IDPH said.

A third person who experienced severe bleeding after using synthetic marijuana has died in IL, health officials confirmed.

"This bleeding is not expected, at least in such a significant population so quickly", Dr. Melissa Millewich, an emergency room physician at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, told the Chicago Tribune. Additionally, Cuomo required that the State Liquor Authority and State Gaming Commission increase their oversight and enforcement efforts to revoke a store owner's liquor and lottery licenses if they are found to be illegally peddling synthetic weed. The Chicago cases are unusual because of the symptoms of severe bleeding caused by the rat poison.
