When Cynthia Nixon announced she was throwing her hat in the ring to be the next governor of NY, many brushed the Sex in the City star's political ambitions aside and blamed Donald Trump for encouraging unqualified candidates to run for office.

During the clip, Nixon noted that while Black and white people use marijuana at the same rates, people of color are 4.5 times more likely than their white counterparts to get arrested for the substance, making it virtually legal for one group but not the other.

A lot of you have been asking about my position on marijuana.

"Because I love this state", she said.

New York's Democratic Primary is in September.

When asked about Nixon's cannabis endorsement on April 11, Cuomo responded by harkening back to his health department directive to study legalization. Boehner, along with Weld issued a joint statement Wednesday, saying the time has come for changes at the federal level. "[If cannabis] was legalized in Jersey and it was legal in MA and the federal government allowed it to go ahead, what would that do to NY, because it's right in the middle?" he asked rhetorically.

Cuomo has opposed legalizing recreational marijuana in the past, calling it a "gateway drug".

Across the Hudson River in New Jersey, the state's new governor, Phil Murphy, took office in January after campaigning on a pledge to legalize cannabis in the Garden State.

Currently, recreational marijuana is legal in nine states and the District of Columbia, and medical marijuana is available in 29 states. The bill makes reference to opiate use in defining what would be considered "intractable pain", or a state in which the cause of the pain "cannot be removed or otherwise treated with the consent of the patient.it is a pain so chronic and severe as to otherwise warrant an opiate prescription".

An amusing dust-up revealed how the state's political establishment views Nixon as a threatening candidate.

Even if Nixon doesn't win the nomination, hopefully her campaign will help motivate Cuomo to embrace more progressive ideals, such as marijuana legalization.
