Stephen Hawking's funeral today, will be buried next to Sir Isaac Newton

Prof Hawking's ashes will be interred at Westminster Abbey in June, among some of the greatest scientists in history, Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

Eulogies were to be delivered by Robert Hawking, the physicist's eldest child, and Professor Fay Dowker, one of Hawking's former students.

The actor played the renowned physicist in the 2015 film The Theory of Everything.

Many of us knew him and were often part of the arrangements that meant he could enjoy his life as a Fellow of Caius as fully as possible.

Actor Eddie Redmayne, who played Hawking in the 2014 biographical drama "The Theory of Everything", was to give a reading from the Bible, followed by a reading by Martin Rees, Britain's astronomer royal.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of the English city of Cambridge on Saturday, breaking into applause as the hearse carrying the remains of famed British scientist Stephen Hawking arrived at the church.

Prof Hawking, who died aged 76, had many friends and admirers in the entertainment world, and made cameos in a number of productions.

White lilies representing the universe and white roses for the polar star were placed on Hawking's oak coffin.

A condolence book, which was opened on the morning of Prof Hawking's death, will be available to members of the public in the porters' lodge of Gonville and Caius College.

He was restricted to a wheelchair, almost totally paralysed and not able to speak other than through his hallmark voice synthesiser.

It is not known how big the crowds will be, but given Hawking's worldwide fame, sources in Cambridge are predicting large numbers. His 1988 book, "A Brief History in Time", an explainer of physics' for the general public became an global best seller, with more than 10 million copies sold. The professor died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Cambridge, the spokesman said.

After taking his bachelor's degree at the University of Oxford, he transferred to Cambridge for his doctorate and remained there for the rest of his profession.

Prof Hawking's coffin was carried by six porters from the college, all in traditional uniform including bowler hats.
