Hurley chose the Huskies over staying with Rhode Island and a more lucrative deal at Pittsburgh, but will get a six-year deal with UConn, according to the report.

In the statement announcing his hiring, Hurley said he was "honored and excited" to become the new men's basketball coach. "This program, which is part of one of the top public universities in the country, has a championship history and wonderful support from a passionate fan base. I look forward to continuing this proud tradition", he said.

UConn recently fired coach Kevin Ollie but has not commented on the reason.

University of Rhode Island basketball coach Dan Hurley, who has resurrected the URI men's program and taken the Rams to two consecutive NCAA tournaments, is leaving to coach at the University of CT for a salary reported to be about $3 million a year.

Hurley, 45, just finished his sixth season at Rhode Island and is widely considered to be the top mid-major coach available on the market.

Tom Moore, a former UConn assistant, is coming with Hurley.

Dan Hurley is off to Storrs.

Ollie signed a five-year, multi-million dollar contract extension in 2014, the same year he led the Huskies to an NCAA championship.

Hurley's deal with the Huskies is a six-year contract, that pays less than he would have received if he would have accepted the Pitt job.

In Stallings' two seasons at Pitt, the Panthers were just 24-41.

Hurley brought URI to the forefront of college basketball the last two seasons. Also commitment to build a basketball-only practice facility (to be completed within next 2 years), staff salary increases and ability to charter for all away games.

He led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2018 Atlantic 10 regular season title, compiling an overall record of 112-82 in the process. There's also going to be a name-ID factor with the Hurley name that will help the program recruit outside of the Northeast.
