Analyst Luke Lin of Digitimes Research claims a 5.85-inch OLED iPhone believed to be arriving this fall as part of the iPhone line's yearly update will be far lower than the existing MBOM for the iPhone X, which he claims was more than $400 when it launched a year ago.

Reports earlier this year suggested Apple is working three new iPhones for release later this year.

Apple may or may not pass on this cost savings to consumers, who now have to pay a hefty $999 for the 2017 iPhone X. Lin predicts it will, positioning the device as the cheapest of the trio, followed by the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone and the 6.45-inch OLED iPhone X Plus.

Luke Lin, Research analyst at Digitimes today said that the new 5.85-inch display model of the upcoming iPhone would feature the total bill of materials over 10% lesser than the iPhone X, meaning the price of the upcoming model will be definitely cheaper than the current model. If there really is a third color on the way for Apple's most expensive iPhone ever, it's worth asking exactly what the company expects to accomplish.

Alongside these two OLED-shod models will be a 6.1-inch LCD-powered iPhone, which could be another version of the plus-size iPhone - possibly called the iPhone 9 Plus. It might just get terminated eventually. The company was reportedly planning to launch the LCD version of the handset "due to MBOM concerns". Samsung had apparently gained a lot of leverage in negotiations since the iPhone X's demand was weaker than expected, leaving Apple to order less panels than previously thought.

According to Lin's supply chain study, Apple has managed to reach an agreement with Samsung Display to secure "satisfactory terms" for OLED display panels that will prevent the cost rising.

The report states that the 5.85-inch iPhone could be cheaper than this model though, as Apple is reportedly sampling cheaper components in its makeup. He says that engineering samples have shown that this particular model has adopted components with lower specs than in the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone.
