Windows Server 2019 Preview is out

That means that it's a preview of the next feature update to Windows 10, after the Redstone 4 update that should be out next month. Like the previous version, much of the pitch for Windows Server 2019 is how well it works with Microsoft Azure in hybrid cloud deployments, but it also suggests Microsoft is having a bit of a hard time with an accelerated release schedule introduced a year ago. This test release, which is the semiannual channel release form of the server, is labeled "build 17623", according to Microsoft's Windows Insider program announcement. "In Windows Server 2019, we are continuing on this journey to improve WSL, helping Linux users bring their scripts to Windows while using industry standards like OpenSSH, Curl & Tar".

For existing users of Windows Server 2016, there will be the usual twice-yearly update at the same time that the 2019 long-term edition arrives.

With Windows Server 2019, it will be easy to integrate Microsoft cloud services like Azure File Sync, Azure Backup, and disaster recovery. Microsoft charges licensing costs for the ability to connect to Windows Server, which are called "CALs".

In general, Microsoft wants testers to validate in-place upgrades from Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016. Microsoft defines a Cluster Set as "a loosely-coupled grouping of multiple Failover Clusters: compute, storage or hyper-converged".

Microsoft also said, "We are embedding Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection into Windows Server 2019, which is supposed to help its customers more easily discover and remediate security breaches before they turn into massive problems". Microsoft is also adding Encrypted Networks allowing admins to encrypt network segments.
