Children's shoes at Capitol represent those killed in last 5 years

The shoes, which came from family members of victims, celebrities and citizens across the country, were placed early Tuesday morning and are expected to stay until late afternoon, the group said.

The 7,000 shoes in the "Monument for our Kids" installment represent every child that was killed by gunfire since the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, according to Avaaz. The figure used by Avaaz would amount to approximately 6,825 children killed by guns in that time period. The shoes will be donated when the monument is dismantled later today.

The Parkland shooting was the deadliest school shooting since 26 were killed in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in CT.

A 19-year-old with a semi-automatic rifle killed 17 people at a high school in Florida on February 14, sparking rage among parents, students and educators.

The symbolic shoe demonstrations likely draw inspiration from the renowned memorial at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest that honors lives lost during the Holocaust.
