CDC says missing doctor not passed over for promotion

Dr. Schuchat continued on to say that Cunningham received "an early promotion/exceptional proficiency promotion to Commander", which went into effect on July 1, 2017, "in recognition of his exemplary performance".

Police said Cunningham called his mother, who missed the call, and he didn't leave a voicemail, WGCL-TV reports.

The statement comes weeks after the February 27 briefing by Maj.

Atlanta Police Sgt. John Chafee told CBS News the department stands behind previous statements made regarding Dr. Cunningham's employment, citing the CDC as the direct source of the information.

Police told CBS News the information they've received was from the CDC.

"That meeting was to explain a promotion that he did not receive to branch manager".

Police didn't find evidence of foul play, and efforts to find him in the woods near his home turned up empty, according to reports.

The unusual circumstances surrounding Cunningham's disappearance have continued to baffle authorities.

Monday's statement from the CDC surely validates the family's efforts to set the record straight, stating "over and above any of his assignments at CDC, his early promotion within the United States Public Health Service reflects his excellence as an officer and an employee".

Cunningham, 35, works as a team lead for the CDC's Division of Population Health.
