Tiger Woods, Ernie Els reportedly will captain 2019 Presidents Cup

Els, a four-time major victor, takes over from Nick Price who has guided the Internationals at the last three Presidents Cups.

However, his return to form may complicate that with Woods likely to qualify for the team as a player if he continues to play well.

Tiger Woods will guide the USA efforts in Melbourne at next year's Presidents Cup.

Tiger Woods will be named the USA team's captain for the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia, according to a report by Alex Miceli of the Morning Read, who cited sources.

Woods and South Africa's Els are due to be announced as captains on Wednesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Florida's Bay Hill.

All that being said, he has been heavily involved in team events during the last couple of years as he has battled a succession of injuries off the course.

Woods has played on eight Presidents Cup teams during his career but 2019 will mark his first since 2013.

The 2019 Presidents Cup will be the 13th match in the competition's history. The rules then were for a player from each team to have his name placed in an envelope, and they would play sudden-death to decide the Presidents Cup. After three extra holes between the two nominated players failed to break the deadlock, and with daylight fading fast, team captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to share the cup.

Woods referred to it at the time as one of his most nerve-wracking moments.

It prompted four-time major victor Els, an assistant captain to Nick Price in NY, to call for sweeping changes ahead of the showpiece in Melbourne. That includes twice in the majors, though Woods won those by 15 shots (2000 U.S. Open) and eight shots (2000 British Open).

The Presidents Cup has found tremendous corporate support with Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, Citibank and Rolex, but the matches lack a competitive balance.
