The third nor'easter in 10 days is expected to blast parts of the Northeast with snow, ice and heavy winds overnight Monday - threatening a fresh round of power outages and treacherous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service said Monday that Suffolk County in NY, and southern CT would receive a heavy, wet snowfall of 5 to 10 inches, with 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour. Still, wind gusts up to 65 miles an hour in southeastern MA could stress tree limbs, said Kim Buttrick, a local National Weather Service meteorologist. The weather service says waves will rapidly build to between 15 and 20 feet just east of Cape Ann and across Stellwagen Bank and Massachusetts Bay by the time of the Tuesday morning high tide.

Light snow accumulations of up to two inches are possible Monday night into early Tuesday morning which could result in slippery conditions especially on bridges and untreated roads. "Not necessarily in terms of snow, although they may get a few inches more, but the issue across far southeast it's going to be a wetter snow", said Frank.

While the first two storms of the month brought coastal flooding and hundreds of thousands of power outages, this one is expected to be different. Last week, a nor'easter slammed into the East Coast on the heels of an earlier powerful storm that killed at least eight people and knocked out power for 2.7 million.

Dozens of Long Island schools were closed Tuesday.

Roads will become snow covered, and moderate to heavy snow will be falling in parts of the state during the morning drive.

Also, the wind could gust over 40 miles per hour, especially along the shoreline in southeastern CT.

The NWS warned that travel during Tuesday morning and evening will be hard to impossible. Rain may become snow as far south as Raleigh, as roads in this region may become slick and unsafe in these conditions.

The flooding that plagued the region during a January 4 storm and the March 2 storm is not expected to be as big a problem.

Victor Nouhan, an weather service meteorologist in Caribou, said strong winds are less of a concern in ME, though some gale-force gusts might be felt along the immediate coast.

A third Nor'easter in the past two weeks is headed up the East Coast with New England square in its path for a potential blizzard.

"Hopefully this will be the final punch of the winter", Buttrick said. "Tree branches could fall due to strong winds". Boston schools are closed Tuesday, and a snow emergency in the city went into effect Monday night.

The winter weather advisory is expected to expire at 10 am Tuesday.
