Under fire for agreeing to talks with North Korea, the White House responded by warning that no summit would occur unless Pyongyang took "concrete actions" over its nuclear program. That session will provide more insight for the Trump-Kim meeting that South Korean National Security Council chief Chung Eui-yong said will take place by May.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a South Korean representative on Tuesday (March 13) he wants talks with North Korea, called to dismantle Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and missile programmes, to resolve a dispute over past abductions of Japanese citizens as well.

"It is expected that there will be more rapid progress regarding the freezing and dismantling of the North Korean nuclear program than in the past, as the leaders of the US and North Korea will meet directly this time", he said. But Deputy White House spokesman Raj Shah said on Sunday that no additional conditions are being stipulated.

The South claims the North is willing to discuss denuclearization, but it likely will only do so on terms the US should never accept. Kim may offer to give up his nukes for USA forces' pullout from South Korea and a signed peace treaty.

Mr Trump said last week that he had accepted an offer to meet with Mr Kim - an agreement that would make him the first sitting U.S. president to meet face-to-face with a North Korean leader.

The congressman said time will tell whether this president's strategy of dealing with North Korea will be more effective than prior administrations.

Trump said he believes North Korea will abide by its pledge to suspend missile tests while he prepares for the summit. Pyongyang might have taken such a step to maximize its bargaining power without crossing any red lines, which would result in a US military assault.

"As long as all sides can focus on the fundamental goals of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and peace and stability, a day of the melting of the hard ice and the blossom of the spring flowers will be seen on the Korean Peninsula", he said.
