"But if I do make a deal which is fair to the workers and to the American people, that would be, I would imagine, one of the points that we'll negotiate; it will be tariffs on steel for Canada and for Mexico", Trump said.

"We are on the losing side of nearly all trade deals", Trump tweeted on Sunday. It's not just the USA economy that will suffer: The tariffs would punish some of America's closest allies, including NAFTA partners and the EU. Harley already is being hit by a deepening slump in United States motorcycle demand, which has spurred job cuts and a plant closure at the Milwaukee-based company.

Senior Republican Paul Ryan has publicly urged Donald Trump to not proceed with proposed steel & aluminum tariffs, saying he is "extremely worried" about the potential consequences.

The president also wrote that Canada must treat USA farmers better and Mexico must do more to stop drugs from getting into the United States. "Millions of people addicted and dying", he said. "We will soon be starting reciprocal taxes so that we will charge the same thing as they charge us", he said.

President Trump himself took to Twitter to claim "trade wars are good". "I don't think you'll have a trade war", Trump said.

"No, we're not backing down", he said.

The US President said the move was in response to decades of "disgraceful" unfair trade policies.

Hillary Clinton's Dream: Republicans Might Primary President Trump in 2020
In addition, Clinton said President Trump ran "the first reality TV campaign", and was the first "reality TV candidate". I just can't understand why her message wasn't more compelling in rural parts of America.

The EU hit back threatening to target USA imports such as Harley-Davidson motorbikes, Levi's jeans and Kentucky bourbon whiskey.

"I don't see that changing anytime soon but I am anxious about this sort of sentiment shift, that people all around the world might suddenly say free trade is not good for the world, and that would be particularly bad for a trading company like BHP and a trading nation like Australia".

China is the world's largest steel exporter, but the share of the country's steel in U.S. imports is only 2%.

South Korean Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong on Tuesday departed for his second trip to the U.S.in ten days to seek an exemption for Seoul from the proposed tariffs.

The tariffs, which function as a tax on imports, would add a 25% tax on imports of steel and 10% on aluminum.

"Canada would view any trade restrictions on Canadian steel and aluminum as absolutely unacceptable", the statement read.

According to a GOP source, Congress could consider legislative action related to the new tariffs if Trump follows through.
