CBI moves court for narco test of Karti Chidambaram

On Sunday, the CBI took Karti to Byculla prison where he and Indrani were put face-to-face and questioned.

On Tuesday, the court extended Karti's custody by three more days as the CBI said his detention is essential to maintain conformity in the case.

The CBI alleged Karti also received money from INX media to scuttle a tax probe.

Mehta sought an extension of the custody of Chidambaram, as certain new facts had come to light during the interrogation which needed to be further interrogated.

Outside the trial court in Patiala House, Karti repeated his stand that the allegations against him were baseless.

"Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for CBI, told the court that Karti is not co-operating with the investigation by not revealing his phone password and repeatedly claiming his 'political victimization".

According to sources, the decision to seek a narco-analysis test was taken because Karti has remained "evasive" in his answers to the CBI.

Urging the judge to look into the higher courts judgements, Singhvi said, "The custody is to extract confession.unless you are a terrorist with a bomb who can not be questioned without being kept in custody, one should go by settled legal provisions".

The FIR alleged irregularities in Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds worth Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father, P Chidambaram was the Union finance minister. However, there has been a substantial progress in the matter; the CBI officials claimed that Karti is not cooperating in the investigation.

The CBI also filed applications seeking production warrant of Karti's charted accountant S Bhaskararaman and Indrani Mukerjea.

On March 1, the Patiala House Court in Delhi had sent the junior Chidambaram to CBI custody for five days following which he was questioned for almost seven hours by the CBI.

The ED's special public prosecutor Nitesh Rana had earlier told the court that during the course of an investigation, it was revealed that Bhaskararaman had been assisting Karti to manage his "ill-gotten wealth" in India and overseas. The statement was recorded under section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate on February 17.
