Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are likely to be hotter since they are hit by heat waves, he added.

The "normal" temperatures refer to the mean temperatures during these months between 1981 and 2010. The pre-monsoon months this year - March, April and May - will be warmer than normal and the heat wave will hit 16 states, apart from Delhi, earlier due to various reasons. During the 2018 pre-monsoon season warmer than normal temperatures are likely in all meteorological subdivisions, IMD said, adding, average temperatures over numerous subdivisions from the north-west to central India are likely to be above normal by more than 1 degree Celsius.

The biggest change is expected in Himachal, J&K and Uttarakhand, with temperature changes of over 2.4 degrees.

Delhi, along with Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, is likely to see average temperatures rise over 1.5 degrees above normal.

Temperature increase lesser than 0.5 degree will be witnessed in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, north and south interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. The remaining subdivisions should see a rise of 0.5-1 degree.

Based on its monsoon mission climate forecast system (MMCFS) the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday, "Currently, the sea surface temperature conditions over equatorial Pacific suggest moderate La Nina conditions".

The heat will mostly affect regions such as Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan, where the temperatures may even be 1.5 degrees higher than average, reported the Times of India.

The forecast for the March to May period is prepared on the basis of prevailing initial conditions in February.

"Overall, the temperature anomaly patterns show increase in the magnitudes of the anomalies from southeastern parts to the northwestern parts of the country", an IMD release said. The pre-monsoon season is from March to May.

The outlook indicated "above normal" maximum, minimum and mean temperatures across the country.
